The growth of the world population, the increase in urbanization, and the significant change in consumption habits have led to a high demand for food by humans, which will increase dramatically in the coming decades?along with the impact of climate change (loss of biodiversity, deteriorating soil and water quality). On the other hand, there is also an increase in demand for forest products and a greater need to preserve forests. Robotics research for use in agriculture and forestry has made great progress both in theoretical research and in practical applications. This Special Issue is dedicated to new advances in robotics in agriculture and forestry. The objective is to publish the works developed in robotics with applications in the agricultural and forestry areas, in which automation and intelligence play important roles. The focus of this Special Issue is on the presentation of several theoretical and practical problems related to robotics, in addition to new discoveries, new ideas, and innovative improvements made in the field of robotics in agriculture and forestry. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to the following: Robots for pruning, thinning, harvesting, mowing, spraying, and weed remova. Lisbon, Portugal, invites applications for PhD student to contribute to its long-standing activities in the domain of multi-robot systems, including an excellent track-record of related research projects: http://welcome.isr.tecnico.ulisboa.pt/projects_cat/irsg/ The PhD positions will be part of the new nationally-funded project (FCT) HOTSPOT “Human-robOt TeamS without PrecoOrdinaTionâ€. The exciting research key goal of HOTSPOT is to explore the challenges that the collaborative interaction between robots and humans poses in terms of decision making. PhD topic: Cooperative Perception for Human and Robot Intention Prediction in Mixed Human-Robot Teams Interaction with humans and other robots is an important component that all robots part of a human/robot team should include. To achieve a natural interaction the robot needs to be aware of the intentions of the other agents in its environment, whether they are human or robots. This is where cooperative perception is relevant, by making use of a sensor network based on a group of robots that can make use of their mobility and multiple sensors to better perceive not only their static environment, but to predict human and robot intentions. This prediction will facilitate the robot decision making, as well as its human-aware navigation and cooperation in a heterogeneous multirobot team. This thesis will fit that need by proposing new human and robot intention prediction methods allied to static environment perception to create a novel cooperative perception approach. Candidates should have a master’s degree in Robotics and AI, Electrical/Information and Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related areas. The research tasks require a good mathematical background, knowledge of probabilistic robotics and good programming skills. Previous experience with real robots and knowledge of machine learning are potential advantages.
